Hvalsey Norse Ruins Zodiac Transfer & Walk
Exciting, exhilarating, memorable -- welcome to Expedition Experiences by Seabourn. Zodiac, kayaking or hiking activities enable you to experience the wonders of nature up close; in-depth cultural, ethnographic and archaeological discoveries connect you to the human and natural history of Seabourn's world. Each Expedition is expertly planned, professionally operated, and escorted by skilled expedition staff.
This combination Zodiac ride and walk, in the company of the Expedition Team, allows you to explore the land around Hvalsey and Qaqortoq. According to the Sagas, this area once belonged to a relative of Erik the Red. Christianity arrived in Greenland around AD 1000 and numerous churches were subsequently built. But isolation and the end of the Medieval Warming Period eventually called the Norse people home. The last written record of them living in Greenland is of a wedding that took place in September, 1408, at the Hvalsey Church. Transfer by Zodiac along the coastline surrounding Qaqortoq. At the head of the fjord, some 12 nautical miles (one hour) distant from Qaqortoq, you will find the ruins of the Hvalsey Church and an extensive Norse farm. The church ruins, set on a peaceful terrace, are the most impressive remnant of Norse Greenland and a key element in the region's designation.
Please note: There is a jetty landing at Hvalsey and a short, uneven track to reach the main terrace elevation. A walk of approximately 100 yards brings you to the church ruins. Terrain is uneven, with rocks embedded in the grass. Tour departs from and returns to the ship. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. A waterproof and windproof outer layer can be provided upon request; however, this marine layer is not suitable for use during the time spent on land. Wear sunglasses and biodegradable sunscreen; bring insect repellent. Bring a waterproof bag for your devices. There are steps to negotiate when (dis)embarking the Zodiac, with assistance offered. Tour generally operates rain or shine but may be canceled in the event of extremely bad weather or unsuitable conditions. Minimum age is 6 years.
