Transfer just seven minutes to Kodiak's harbor; then, relax aboard a comfortable boat with just six privileged guests, guaranteeing a highly personalized, informal, and intimate experience tailored to your interests. The goal is to get close to wildlife for excellent photo opportunities with great visibility.
Your friendly captain is a Kodiak islander, highly experienced in these waters, and the tour operator has been in business for more than 30 years. Your captain's extensive knowledge of local history and the commercial fishing industry here will enhance your experience today. An unstructured itinerary allows plenty of time for stories, insights, photos, questions, and spontaneous discoveries. Your captain steers you through the working harbor, past Kodiak's historical cannery row. See where the famous king crab fleet from Deadliest Catch moors for the summer, as well as purse seiners, halibut boats, and classic schooners. The present-day fishing industry is key to the survival of this small community.
You'll also head out to the beautiful bird rookeries nearby, where you can see hundreds or even thousands of kittiwakes and both tufted and horned puffins. These seabirds nest on sheer, windswept cliffs. Look up, and you may see majestic bald eagles nesting in the tops of the Sitka spruce trees.
Passing some smaller islands, watch for gun sites from the World War II era and abundant marine mammals — sea lions, otters and hopefully various whales, including humpback and orcas. This outing puts you at the heart of Alaska's natural wonders.
Learn about Kodiak's early Native inhabitants, the days of the Russian colony and the fur trade, and beyond to World War II.
Please note: Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer; bring a warm hat, gloves and a scarf. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Minimum age is 8 years. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Bring binoculars. Three boats are used with six guests per boat for a small-group experience.
