Experience a world of legendary beauty with a drive to the Oga Peninsula. Rugged, breathtaking and mysterious, the area boasts steep cliffs, volcanic crater lakes, and the stuff of ancient legends.
You may not be surprised to learn that this picturesque countryside is home to the namahage -- demon-like ogres who, as messengers of the mountain gods, visit local villages in search of lazy individuals, while blessing each household and warding off evil spirits. Uncover the truth behind the legend (or is it for real?) with a visit to the Namahage Museum, where you’ll learn that young men disguised as the namahage enter people’s houses on December 31 and scare the family before warding off bad energy and blessing them. Sixty life-sized models of namahage costumes and masks will be a highlight your tour.
At the Mt Kanpuzan Observatory, climb the stone steps that lead to the rotating observation platform and admire the views from a bird’s-eye perspective. The scenery changes as you rotate 360 degrees, with many varied photo opportunities courtesy of the landscape, which is devoid of trees.
Please note:
Tour sequence may vary. Mt Kapuzan Observatory is not wheelchair accessible. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. The view from the observatory is subject to the weather conditions. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring local currency for purchases, as few stores accept credit cards. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration.
