Take off on a thrilling adventure that features the drama and beauty of Aomori's famed attractions.
A panoramic drive through the city brings you to the Seiryu-ji Temple -- home of the Showa Daibutsu, Japan's largest seated image of Buddha. The setting's lush landscape and peaceful serenity will enchant you, as well as the stunning 70-foot tall, 220-ton bronze statue.
Mt Hakkoda, in a range of dormant volcanoes, lies south of Aomori. An exciting way to capture the beauty and magnitude is from the . Board a tramway car and soar up more than 4,000 feet to the summit station. From this dazzling vantage point you can see the spectacular swamps and fertile marshes left over from the volcanic eruptions that began almost two million years ago. In spring and summer, the forest is vibrant in multi-hued shades of green. Expect to find trees covered in glowing shades of orange and gold in the fall. In winter, Mt Hakkoda is glazed in ice and snow, and is one of Japan's best ski and snowboarding destinations. At the top, take in the magnificent views that stretch from Mutsu Bay all the way to Tsugaru Peninsula.
Your next destination is the mesmerizing Sannai-Maruyama archaeological site, which features reconstructed pit dwellings, houses and a large tower from the Jomon period (13,000 to 300 BC). Recognized as a Special National Historical Site, it's the largest and one of the most complete Jomon villages in Japan.
Sit down at a local restaurant for a Western-style lunch.
Visit the Wa Rasse Nebuta House. Aomori Nebuta is designated an 'important intangible cultural asset' in Japan, and is one of Japan's major festivals. The Nebuta House introduces you to all aspects of the Nebuta Festival, which is a treasure shared by the citizens of Aomori. Five large, well-built Nebuta floats are exhibited in the museum, updated annually.
