First, we visit Hiroshima Lacquer Art Workshop, founded in 1913. This workshop preserves the 400-year-old tradition of Hiroshima Buddhist altars. Experience a tour by Japan’s renowned lacquer artist, Mr. Takayama Naoya, and a hands-on activity to create a gold leaf coaster using traditional techniques. You will learn about the history of Hiroshima Buddhist altars and the story of lacquer craftsmanship. Discover the unique techniques passed down through generations as Mr. Takayama explains his inspiration and meticulous process. About Mr. Takayama Naoya is a 4th-generation artisan who continues the legacy of lacquer while pursuing the beauty of Japan. Also, he works were selected as gifts for the G7 Summit, personally guides the tour and introduces his award-winning pieces. After the tour, create your own gold leaf coaster to take home as a special memory.
Next, we board a private boat to explore the oyster farming rafts. Hiroshima is the top producer of oysters in Japan, and the waters off Miyajima offer perfect conditions for their growth. You will get an up-close look at these massive rafts and learn how fishermen have cultivated world-class oysters here for centuries.
The journey culminates in a "Maritime Pilgrimage" off Miyajima. Since ancient times, people have visited Itsukushima Shrine by boat to pray for safety at sea. Beholding the Great Torii and the shrine from the water—away from the land crowds—is a luxurious, private experience that lets you savor this World Heritage site in serene silence.
Deeply enjoy this special day, immersing yourself in Hiroshima’s proud "craftsmanship".
Please note: The distance the boat can approach the Great Torii depends on the tide levels. No guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day, as weather and atmospheric conditions vary and are beyond the tour operator’s control. Wear comfortable shoes. Tour order may vary. The coach cannot accommodate scooters. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Suggest to carry a local currency (Japanese yen for additional purchases). Please note that both the Hiroshima Lacquer Art Workshop and the oyster farming rafts are active workplaces, not leisure facilities. Due to the limited space in these professional environments, guests may be asked to take turns to observe the work up close or experience of the crafts. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
