Head to the Goryokaku Tower for a view of the graceful Goryokaku pentagonal fort structure (1864). The tower offers picture-perfect photo-ops with the historical park and its surroundings sprawling below. Admire the intact star-shaped fortress, including a moat and, in season, gorgeous cherry blossoms.
Walk to the Hakodate Bugyosho, or Magistrate's Office, located in Goryokaku Park and opened in 2010. The structure you see today is a faithful copy of the original building, assembled using traditional methods. It now serves as a museum. Remove your shoes, in keeping with Japanese custom, and step inside the building to view the historical exhibits.
A visit to the Kanamori Red Brick Warehouse area is a step back in time. Remodeled in 1988, this district perfectly melds the old and the new. Shops, boutiques, restaurants, and cultural spaces relentlessly charm visitors and coax you to explore the city's maritime heritage. Among the treasures here are local craft and souvenir stores, fresh seafood stalls, and picturesque waterfront views.
