Welcome to Matsushima, celebrated as one of Japan's three most scenic spots. This coastal town is renowned for its stunning bay adorned with numerous small islands.
Hop aboard a boat and cruise among the 260 islands in this picturesque bay. Take photos across the azure waters to the islets covered in pine trees.
On Matsushima, step ashore and walk to the pint-sized Godaido Temple Hall, known for its architectural design and breathtaking views of the surrounding islands.
From there, stroll to Zuiganji Temple, founded in AD 1609. It is among the Tohoku region's most famous Zen temples and is renowned for its beautifully painted fusuma sliding doors. The adjacent Zuiganji Treasure Museum exhibits treasures, including original samurai swords, interesting historical artifacts, and traditional art that is quite sublime.
Walk to a local restaurant for lunch before visiting Entsuin Temple, an Important Cultural Property founded in 1647. The mausoleum's interior is decorated in gold leaf and paintings and the rock garden with maple and cedar trees is a scenic representation of the Matsushima islands.
