Depart the pier for an approximately two-hour drive to Hiraizumi -- a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Stroll to the Chuson-ji Temple -- founded in 850 and now one of the most important Buddhist temple complexes in Japan. Its collection of temples and gardens form a culture-rich enclave created to represent an ideal world based on Buddhist principles. The Treasure Hall showcases more than 3,000 National Treasures and Important Cultural Properties. The Golden Hall, an original structure dating from 1123, contains an ornately decorated shrine with inlaid mother-of-pearl and Buddha images in golden lacquer.
Continue to the Motsuji Temple -- one of the Tendai sect's most important temples, established in AD 850. It consists of several buildings, but today it is best known for its garden -- one of the few remaining pure land gardens in Japan. Explore with your guide to discover that, like other pure land gardens, Motsuji's garden is created around a large pond.
Enjoy lunch at a local restaurant before driving back to Ishinomaki.
