Step aboard your comfortable coach and be transported to an ancient world in the heart of the city!
Kochi Castle, the city’s most iconic landmark, commands your view from nearly any vantage point. Explore the impressive donjon (main tower), the majestic Otemon Gate (main gate), and the honmaru (central bailey), which remain preserved in their original form. You'll also pass through the beautifully restored Tsumemon Gate, which connects the ninomaru (second bailey) to the heart of the castle. While many of the ancient rooms remain closed to the public, a small museum showcases fascinating cultural artifacts. Don’t miss the spectacular panoramic views of the city from the top of the donjon if the weather permits.
Next, continue to Chikurin-ji Temple, a revered Shingon Buddhist temple said to have been founded in the early 8th century. It is one of the temples on the famous Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage route. The temple grounds feature an array of historic halls and structures, including a stunning pagoda. The treasure hall displays several important Buddhist statues and scrolls, while the hondo (main hall) offers a serene view of the interior and a beautifully kept garden.
Afterward, take a leisurely stroll around the Kochi Castle grounds, now a beloved public park, dotted with magnificent statues honoring the Yamanouchi family, the former rulers of the area. Finally, return to the pier.
