See the sights of Kochi at a more leisurely pace.
Departing the port by coach, take a short leisurely drive to Katsurahama Beach, one of the most popular spots in Kochi and ranked in the top 100 beaches in Japan. Enjoy some free time to explore the crescent-shaped beach, framed by rocky capes and Japanese pines. Just above the beach is a bronze monument commemorating the samurai Sakamoto Ryoma, who was born in Kochi City.
After visiting the beach, enjoy a drive along the Harimaya bridge, a tiny red-arched bridge in an area where department stores and other noticeable buildings stand side by side in the heart of Kochi City.
Continue with a visit to Kochi Castle that was built following the battle of Sekigahara in 1600. See the impressive ‘donjon’ (main tower), the splendid ‘Otemon Gate’ and the ‘honmaru’ (ring of defence), which remain as originally constructed. You’ll also pass the beautifully restored Tsumemon Gate and have an opportunity to stroll the castle grounds, now a popular public park, dotted with magnificent statues of the Yamanouchi family.
Then visit a local restaurant and enjoy a Japanese traditional meal accompanied by Geisha performers. During your visit, you will enjoy a combination of refined hospitality, classical music, dance, and traditional Japanese games.
After lunch, head to The Chikurin-ji Temple. This is a Shingon temple that is said to have been founded in the early 8th century and forms part of the Shikoku 88 temple pilgrimage, Japan’s most famous pilgrimage route. The temple grounds feature an interesting array of halls and structures, including a beautiful pagoda. A treasure hall displays several Buddhist statues and scrolls of importance to the temple, and the hondo (main hall) offers a view of the building's interior and a beautiful garden.
