The Sakawa Walking Tour offers a captivating glimpse into the rich history and culture of Sakawa Town, Kochi Prefecture. Known for its connection to notable historical figures, the town is home to many preserved buildings, including those along the "Sake Brewery Road." Here, visitors can admire sake warehouses from different eras, including one of Japan's longest, at 85 meters.
The tour continues to the nationally designated Important Cultural Property, the Takemura Residence, a grand Edo-period merchant house. You'll also visit an Edo-period samurai school and stop by local shops to purchase souvenirs. Walking through streets lined with charming wooden structures, you'll feel transported back in time.
Continue to a local restaurant to enjoy traditional Japanese cuisine. There, you will experience a Japanese lunch served in the Sawachi style, where dishes are shared from a large communal plate.
Then, head for the pristine and ever-popular Katsurahama Beach. Ranked among Japan’s top 100 beaches, it’s a beachcomber’s paradise. The crescent shaped beach is flanked by dark rocky capes and picturesque Japanese, deep green pine trees. The golden sand is lapped by bright blue waters. Enjoy some free time to explore the beach and make sure you get to see the bronze monument commemorating the samurai Sakamoto Ryoma, who was born in Kochi City.
A scenic drive will return you to the port.
