Gain insight into traditional Japanese arts and crafts with a day-long excursion to Kami City.
Your journey begins as you travel north over the Kokubu River to a furafu factory. Here, you’ll watch craftsmen create the colorful flags that are traditionally given to newborn sons as a wish for a prosperous future. Learn the techniques and folklore surrounding this 300-year-old process and take home a small gift.
Then, you’ll discover an art form that dates back 30 centuries with a calligraphy experience hosted by the students. After watching a demonstration, you’ll pick up a brush and write your own colorful characters.
A traditional Japanese lunch beckons hungry calligraphers, and is followed by some time at the award-winning Arisawa Sake Brewery. Founded in 1877, Arisawa is one of the area’s oldest breweries. Try three different kinds of sake and learn how to match this popular Japanese rice wine with food.
As you make your way back to the ship, you’ll stop at the Hachioji Shrine, established in 1469. The priest will show you around, and you can write an ema — a small wooden plate inscribed with your wishes — for good luck.
