Long Shan Temple, built in 1738 and just 50 minutes from the pier, features classic Taiwanese architecture styles mixed with design elements from southern China. It is a Buddhist temple, but Daoists and worshippers of aboriginal folk deities come here as well.
Traditional herbal medicines are bought, sold, and traded at nearby Herb Lane. Visit the herbal shops here to learn some tips about which herbs the locals use to stay healthy.
Head to Di-Hua Street, crammed with historic, photogenic Baroque-style houses built in the 1920s. It was once the commercial center of Chinese herbal medicines, dried foods, tea and rice, and is still the main market for fabrics and groceries. Visit the Hsia-hai City Temple, built in 1856 and famous for its Matchmaker, who is said to have brought together more than 6,000 couples.
