A 40-minute scenic drive brings you to Pingxi — the town famous for releasing sky lanterns. The sky lantern was invented during the Three Kingdoms period (AD 220-265) and was initially used to transmit military information. Fast forward to the early 19th century, and the Lantern Festival was born. Every year, at the beginning of the spring planting season, people would release sky lanterns into the air as a prayer for the coming year.
Take an eco-friendly lantern, write down your wishes, dreams, and prayers for the coming year, and release it into the sky. This is a heart-warming and cathartic experience.
Your next destination is Chiufen — the tiny village that was once a center of gold mining in Taiwan. The gold is long gone, but this quaint old village features closely-packed houses clinging to steep mountains. It continues to offer enchanting scenery and fascinating glimpses into the lifestyles of the past.
Return to the pier via a pretty drive through the Northeast Coast Scenic Area. True to its name, the area is indeed scenic, with numerous capes and bays and a verdant mountain backdrop.
Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, cobblestones, inclines, and more than 200 steps. Participants must be able to keep up with the group. Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking.
