Visit the Northern Culture Museum -- once the grand estate of the Ito family. Starting as farmers in the mid-Edo period, the Ito family became the largest landowners in Echigo and, in the post-war land reform era, donated their land, buildings, gardens, and art collections to establish the Northern Culture Museum Foundation. Lieutenant Ralph Wright of the U.S. Army helped protect the estate from confiscation, recognizing its cultural and historical importance. Wander through the expansive, beautifully landscaped gardens and admire the elegance of traditional Japanese architecture.
Next, visit the local sake brewery to learn about the entire brewing process, from rice polishing to fermentation. Niigata is renowned for its sake due to its cold climate, pure water, and high-quality rice. Try about ten different types of sake; which did you like best?
Please note:
The sake brewery is a working facility; space is limited and can feel a little crowded. Changing into slippers is required before you enter the sake brewery. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Tour sequence may vary. Bring local currency for purchases, as few stores accept credit cards. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Traffic can be unpredictable; your patience is greatly appreciated if a delay extends the tour duration.
