A day of exploring the nature and culture of Niigata begins with a drive to the Fukushimaga Wetlands area. This precious natural reserve is assiduously protected to preserve its unique ecosystem, which is home to a diverse range of birds, plants, and animals. Fukushimaga is one of Japan’s most nature-rich areas. Inside the facility, you’ll learn about the wetlands ecosystem, conservation efforts, and biodiversity.
Next, visit the local sake brewery to learn about the entire brewing process, from rice polishing to fermentation. Niigata’s cold climate, pure water, and high-quality rice contribute to producing a style of sake that is a national favorite. You’ll have the chance to taste it and identify the distinctive flavors of the region.
Afterward, head to the Northern Culture Museum -- once the grand estate of the Ito family. Starting as farmers in the mid-Edo Period, the Ito family became the largest landowners in Echigo and, in the post-war land reform era, donated their land, buildings, gardens, and art collections to establish the Northern Culture Museum Foundation. Wander in the grounds -- a series of expansive, beautifully landscaped gardens -- and appreciate the traditional Japanese architecture evocative of another era.
For lunch, savor dishes made with fresh seasonal ingredients while enjoying an elegant performance by the Furumachi Geigi -- the geisha of Niigata. Niigata geigi culture is rooted in the historic Furumachi district and dates back to the early Edo Period. At that time, Niigata flourished as an important trade port, attracting merchants and travelers. Geigi enlivened banquets and captivated guests with their beautiful attire and graceful movements. Niigata’s geigi culture has been revived and is now cherished as a valuable cultural heritage of the region.
