Welcome to a special tour that will expound on the charm of Niigata’s traditions, crafts, food culture, and historical landmarks in one day.
Head to Minoru Metal Works, where traditional hera-shibori processing has been carried out for many years in the Tsubame-Sanjo area. This is a technique where a special metal rod called a hera is pressed against a rotating metal plate to shape and form it -- a metalworking version of a pottery wheel. Hera-shibori is done manually, creating one-of-a-kind pieces. The company president will personally guide you through the factory, explaining the process and techniques and sharing the passionate dedication behind the products.
Next, enjoy a lunch of fresh, locally sourced ingredients served on metal tableware from the Tsubame-Sanjo area.
Visit the Tsubame Industrial Museum and immerse yourself in the world of craftsmanship that defines Tsubame City’s renown for exceptional metalworking skills. As you explore the museum, you’ll discover the fascinating history of Tsubame, from its origins in Edo-period nail production to its rise as a global leader in high-quality manufacturing. One of the highlights of your visit is a hands-on tsuchime (hammered pattern) workshop experience. Create your own unique metalwork by adding intricate hammered patterns, following a traditional technique that blends craftsmanship with artistry. The museum showcases a variety of Tsubame-made masterpieces created by skilled artisans, offering a glimpse into the precision and creativity behind each piece.
Yahiko Shrine boasts a history of more than 2,400 years and is a place of deep reverence for the local people. The surrounding nature is beautiful; enjoy its peaceful atmosphere before you return to the port.
