Discover the wonders of Kitakyushu on this comprehensive half-day tour that takes you to some celebrated sites -- Kokura Castle, the elegant Japanese Garden, and the Tanga Market.
A short drive brings you to famed Kokura Castle (Kokura-jo). It is not clear when the first castle was built, but some major repairs are known to date back to 1602, and these created the form of Kokura Castle you'll see today. The setting of the castle is impressive -- its double and triple moats boast a donjon (keep) at the center. The castle keep appears from the outside to have four floors but actually has five on the inside. It is a noteworthy example of Japanese castle architecture. The modern interior introduces local history, with displays, an interactive zone and a small theater. From the top floor, take in panoramic views over the city, weather permitting.Step outside into the Kokura Castle Japanese Garden. Located to the east of the structure, this garden features the reconstructed residence of an Edo-period feudal lord. The garden itself is quite small relative to the looming castle, but a charming walk on the stone steps leads you through lush greenery to the pond. Watch for the koi carp, glittering like jewels as they flit about in the water. All four seasons are exhibited in splendid surroundings. Indulge in a cup of green tea and a sweet at a traditional Japanese tea ceremony.Next, explore the fresh market -- Kitakyushu's kitchen. Tanga Market dates back to the early Taisho era and boasts more than 100 years of history. A Showa-era atmosphere permeates the air. A row of 120 shops overflows with locally-sourced seafood products, vegetables, side dishes, and more. The locals indulge heartily in a specialty of sardines and mackerels simmered with nukamiso. Feel free to stroll down this market and enjoy the local products in every shops.
Then, drive back to the port.
Please note:
Wear comfortable walking shoes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Due to limited space, the group might be divided into two groups for the Japanese Tea Ceremony at Kokura Castle Garden. Some parts of Tanga Market have been renewed due to a fire which destroyed some of the original shops. Bring local currency, as some vendors do not accept credit cards or US dollars.
