Put on your walking shoes and get up close to Japan's magnificent natural beauty as you explore the country's largest wetland – Kushiro Marshland National Park, on foot.
Your day of discovery begins with a panoramic drive through Kushiro en route to the National Park. Away from the city, enjoy the quiet beauty of the coastal scenery and picturesque wetlands that surround the area.
When you arrive, you’ll be met with the Kushiro Marshland’s spectacular and varied flora and fauna. The park extends over 61,000 acres and is a haven for a wide variety of animals and plants that thrive in the lush environment, including the proud, beautiful Japanese crane.
A naturalist guide will lead you on a hike and point out some of the park's spectacular wildlife. Keep an eye out for Hokkaido deer, red-crested cranes, birds of grassland, and wildflowers. The dense concentration of sedges, reeds, grasses, rushes and flowering plants create a complex and dense habitat perfect for these species to thrive.
Along the way, you’ll stop at an observatory and take in views of the serene Kushiro River and the majestic Mounts Oakan and Meakan in the distance. You will stop at several other observation points surrounded by nature's beauty to take in the scenery, too.
At the end of the day, enjoy a relaxing drive back to Kushiro Port.
Please note:
Please realistically assess your physical fitness and ability prior to booking, as the walk is uphill, over unpaved, rough walking tracks with many steps. Bring local currency, as many vendors do not accept credit cards or U.S. dollars. Wear comfortable walking shoes; bring a jacket or sweater. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. Bring your own binoculars.
