The past is always present in Matsuyama. Surrounded by a modern, pulsating city, beautiful reminders of its medieval origins stand as testaments to its rich history. Spend the day exploring Matsuyama's roots.
Begin with a visit to Matsuyama Castle, arriving by cable car; the ride up offers scenic views of the city and the Seto Inland Sea (Weather permitting). Located atop 433-foot Mt Katsuyama, the 17th-century castle was once the seat of the Matsudaira Clan, who ruled this area during the Edo period. Enclosed by four gates and stone walls, the donjon is an Important Cultural Property dating from 1854 and housing a museum filled with weaponry, calligraphy and art.
Matsuyama's Buddhist history is on full display at the Ishite-ji Temple, a sprawling compound whose treasure house holds some of the temple's most important artifacts. It sits on the 1,100-year-old Shikoku Pilgrimage Route. The Niomon Gate is a designated National Treasure, and the main hall and pagoda are designated Important Cultural Properties.
After lunch at a local restaurant, you'll view Dogo Onsen — said to be the oldest hot-spring baths in Japan. Known for its beautiful 19th-century bathhouse, Dogo Onsen has a long history of welcoming members of Japan's Imperial Family.
Please note: You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, flagstones, inclines, gravel, grass, and hundreds of steep steps up and down. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Expect a delay to board the cable car. You will not bath at the Dogo Onsen. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars. Tour sequence may vary. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse.
