Visit the Motoise Kono Shrine, located on the northern side of Amanohashidate. This shrine is dedicated to the goddesses of agriculture and the sun. It's best known for its architecture, which showcases Japan's oldest shrine-building style. Note the traditional design elements, such as roof logs and decorative crossbeams. The grounds also feature a suikinkutsu — a water harp that resonates with the sound of dripping water.
Take a cable car to Kasamatsu Park for an elevated view of the narrow Amanohashidate sandbar, lined with pine trees. This spot has long been known for the rather unusual tradition of viewing the landscape upside down by bending over and looking through your knees. Try it — it's a great perspective.
Cruise on Ine Bay — a 25-minute sailing experience that allows you to see the rows of funaya — traditional boathouses — from the water. These distinctive structures feature a boat garage on the first floor and living quarters on the second. Many are still used in daily life.
Stroll through Ine Town and take a peek inside one of the 230 remaining funaya boathouses. It's a fascinating glimpse of a lifestyle carved out by a community living in harmony with the sea.
Please note: Travel time is approximately 1¼ hours each way. Expect a line to board the cable car. The cable car operates weather permitting; an elevator may be substituted. If both stop, the tour will visit Amanohashidate. Tour sequence may vary. The funaya are very small; guests will take turns viewing the inside. Some wait time may be required. Tour requires walking approximately 120 minutes. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Unfamiliar accents can be challenging; feel free to ask your guide to repeat or elaborate on information, and to speak more slowly so you can fully comprehend and converse. Weather and atmospheric conditions vary; no guarantee is offered with regard to visibility or views on any particular day. Wear comfortable walking shoes. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s).
