Today, you'll visit Kinkakuji Temple (exterior only) -- a Zen temple in northern Kyoto. The top two floors are completely covered in gold leaf for a totally stunning effect.
Arashiyama, in the far west of Kyoto Prefecture, is tucked along the base of the Arashiyama Mountains. The Togetsukyo Bridge is a well-known central landmark here. Visit the Tenryuji Temple, a Zen temple with a beautiful Japanese garden, and Arashiyama's famous bamboo groves found nearby. North of central Arashiyama, the ambience becomes more rural, with several small temples scattered along the base of the wooded mountains.
Enjoy a Shojin-style lunch consisting of vegetarian dishes similar to those served to monks.
