Sakai's metalworking roots trace back to the 5th century, when blacksmiths gathered to forge tools for constructing the massive tombs of the Mozu-Furuichi Kofun Group — now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In the 16th century, with the introduction of tobacco from Portugal, a massive demand arose for "tobacco knives" to shred the leaves. Crafted with unparalleled sharpness, Sakai's tobacco knives were granted an exclusive official seal of quality by the Tokugawa Shogunate during the Edo period.
Your journey begins at the Sakai Traditional Crafts Museum, where you will explore this rich legacy, learning about the raw materials, manufacturing processes, and proper use of these blades. An incredible variety of specialized knives is on display, each meticulously designed for specific ingredients like meat, fish, or leafy vegetables.
Following your museum visit, enjoy a relaxing lunch at a local restaurant. The highlight of the afternoon takes you to a historic local knife workshop. Here, you will participate in an exclusive hands-on experience under the direct guidance of master artisans. Try your hand at the traditional techniques of knife sharpening and handle fitting, and take home your very own custom-made Sakai knife. More than just a sightseeing excursion, this tour invites you to touch, create, and experience the very pinnacle of Japanese cultural heritage.
Please note: The knife factory is not a sightseeing attraction; space may be limited and participants may be required to take turns observing the process and engaging in each experience. Participants must stand during the knife sharpening experience and sit on low chairs during the handle fitting. You must remove your shoes at one or more location(s). Tour requires walking and standing. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour sequence may vary. Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. Mobility devices (wheelchairs, walkers, scooters, etc) cannot be accommodated on the transportation. Bring local currency or credit cards, as most vendors do not accept US dollars.
