Go beyond the ordinary with a visit to Kek Lok Si Temple, a grand and spiritually significant Buddhist temple complex in Penang. Here you’ll be mesmerized by impressive architecture, ornate pagodas, and a serene ambiance. You’ll feel the reverence and cultural richness among the intricate details and spiritual atmosphere.
Today you’ll start out on your journey to Kek Lok Si Temple (also known as the Temple of Supreme Bliss), atop Penang Hill. It is the largest Chinese Buddhist temple in Malaysia and is infinitely intriguing from the start.
Inside, you’ll find several large, inspiring halls for assembly and prayer. Magnificent statues of Buddha, various Bodhisattvas, and Chinese gods are venerated here. The Seven Tier Pagoda incorporates Chinese, Thai and Burmese architecture into a harmonious whole.
You may also come across the Liberation Pond, which serves as a symbolic and tranquil place where devotees release turtles as an act of merit-making and liberation of living beings, reflecting the temple’s commitment to both spiritual practices and compassion for all forms of life.
If you make your way to the roof, you’ll find a multitude of shops selling souvenirs and other mostly secular commodities.
Nearby, Penang Hill (Bukit Bendera) is 2,750 feet tall. It is a popular among locals and visitors alike. A famous Swiss-made funicular tram whisks visitors to the peak, offering a magnificent panoramic view of Georgetown, the mainland and Penang Bridge. At the summit, you'll find a mosque and a Hindu temple.
