On this tour, we first depart from the port and visit the Indigo Museum, you will learn about the tradition and techniques of indigo dyeing, including the process and history of this art form.
Then, move to the "Udatsu Historical District" for a leisurely stroll. Wakimachi, which prospered as a center for Awa indigo during the Edo period, is known for its traditional "udatsu" (decorative eaves) on merchant houses. Around 50 of these impressive udatsu remain, reflecting the vibrant commercial past of the area.
As we walk through the historic townscape, we will visit the "Yoshida Family Residence," which preserves the appearance of an Edo-period townhouse, providing insight into the lifestyle and architectural style of that era. For lunch, enjoy seasonal dishes made from local ingredients.
After lunch, we visit a local pottery studio. In the past, there was a time when large ceramic vats for aging Awa indigo were actively produced. Today, this tradition continues, and the size of the large ceramic pieces, such as vats and lotus root pots, as well as the climbing kilns used to fire them, are renowned as the largest in Japan. Here, you will observe the traditional pottery-making process and learn about the craftsmanship and beauty of Otani pottery.
Please Note:
You will be required to take off your shoes at one or more locations. The local pottery studio is a work place not for a leisure so capacity is limited.
