Join this journey to the remote and beautiful Mt Potts high-country station -- a farm in the Southern Alps of New Zealand. This is a chance to immerse yourself in the natural, unspoiled beauty of New Zealand's famous 'high country', with its sparkling clear lakes, glistening rivers, rugged mountain ranges, and crisp high-elevation air.
A scenic morning panoramic drive crosses the farmland of the Canterbury Plains, where you will stop for tea or coffee at the country town of Rakaia. Head inland towards the heart of the Southern Alps and take photos at Lake Clearwater. On a sunny day, this alpine lake features views across the water to the mountain chain that forms the backbone of the South Island.
At Mt Potts Station, you will visit Edoras -- a very recognizable Lord of the Rings location, but you don't have to be a Lord of the Rings fan to appreciate the scenery. Enjoy free time to explore this magical landscape and to have your photo taken with Lord of the Rings replica swords.
Travel a short distance to Mt Somers Village for a rustic lunch; then, relax and enjoy the spectacular scenery en route back to Akaroa.

Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Dress warmly in layers, as it can be cooler at higher elevations. Bring a windbreaker. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed. The route is winding.
