On this tour, uncover the Northern Territory's and Darwin's significant roles in Australia's activities during World War II. During World War II, Darwin was bombed 64 times over almost two years.
You'll visit East Point, which military tacticians identified as an ideal defensive position for protecting Darwin Harbour and its assets.
At the Darwin Military Museum, you'll have free time to view the exhibits, artifacts, items of war, artillery pieces, vehicles and firearms. The exhibition space includes The Defence of Darwin Experience and the immersive Bombing of Darwin Gallery to give visitors a sense of the events of February 19, 1942.
Then you’ll visit Charles Darwin National Park, which lies on the outskirts of the city on Frances Bay. It is both a significant wetlands area and a part of a network of World War II military sites established during the development of Darwin as Australia's northern defence line. A number of bunkers and shelters used for storage between 1944 and the mid-1980s are still intact. Walk about 500 yards to the scenic lookout platform for views over the harbor and wetlands.
