Discover the Marine Life and Birdlife of Stunning Taiaroa Head.
Cruising to the end of scenic Otago Peninsula and Taiaroa Head, you will spot other marine life and enjoy insightful commentary describing landmarks like the 1860s lighthouse and 100-year-old Fort Taiaroa with its network of tunnels. The unique albatross-breeding colony here campaigns to protect this giant seabird from extinction. The first Taiaroa-reared albatross chick flew in 1938, and now this protected reserve has an established colony of around 250 birds. Marvel as they soar overhead, their slim wings spanning up to ten feet across as they enact impressive aerial displays. You will also observe courtship, nest building, and chick rearing behaviors. Other creatures here include blue penguins, New Zealand fur seals, and Hooker’s sea lions, who we may see feasting on fish.
Your tour ends back in Port Chalmers, just a short bus transfer back to your ship.
Please Note: Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed.
