Today join a docent from the Historic Places Trust for an introduction to some of the original homes and homesteads around Gisborne. (S)he is a passionate advocate of restoration and maintenance of New Zealand's heritage buildings and offers some marvelous insights into the local residential style.
On a panoramic drive, you will see a raft of buildings, from early working-class cottages to stately homes built for lawyers, doctors and wealthy farmers. Settlement in Gisborne began around 1840, so its architecture runs the gamut from Edwardian, Victorian and Arts & Crafts to Art Deco and Gothic Revival. The settlers of Gisborne had very eclectic taste indeed.
Your tour includes a stop at the Tairawhiti Museum with some time to stretch your legs and enjoy the pretty surroundings.
Enjoy locally-sourced refreshments served en route.
