Magnificent Haleakala, with its vast crater, is the highest point on the island of Maui, at 10,032 feet above sea level. Haleakala is considered dormant, having last erupted in 1790.
You will climb the switchback road leading to the crater’s rim at 9,740 ft. You're traveling through Haleakala National Park. The mountaintop is a favorite for marvelous panoramic views -- weather and cloud conditions permitting. Spectacular natural colors and a tapestry of fascinating landforms fashion a stupendous outlook over the crater. The crater measures 7.5 miles long, 2.5 miles wide and 21 miles around -- large enough to hold all of Manhattan Island, and the Empire State Building could be vertically stacked four times without reaching the top. The scale of this natural wonder is quite staggering.
Enjoy lunch at a local venue.
Next, you'll visit the Maui Ocean Center -- the largest tropical aquarium in the western hemisphere. Its displays offer fine examples of the brilliantly colored marine life found in Hawaii's rich waters.
Return to the ship via the highway.
Please note:
It is cool on Mt Haleakala; bring a windproof jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests who have a heart condition or respiratory difficulties should note that the elevation of the crater viewpoint is 9740 feet above sea level. Views are not guaranteed as they are weather and atmospheric conditions permitting. The road to the summit is a series of winding switchbacks; guests who suffer from motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
Maui Ocean Center Update:
Starting in May 2024, Maui Ocean Center will transition to a cashless payment system where only debit/credit cards will be accepted for purchases of souvenirs, food, and other items. Please remember to bring a credit or debit card if you plan on making any purchases at the Maui Ocean Center.
