You will climb the switchback road leading to the visitors center at 9,740 ft. You're traveling through Haleakala National Park. The visitors center is a favorite for marvelous panoramic views -- weather and cloud conditions permitting. Spectacular natural colors and a tapestry of fascinating landforms fashion a stupendous outlook over the crater. The crater measures 7.5 miles long, 2.5 miles wide and 21 miles around -- large enough to hold all of Manhattan Island, and the Empire State Building could be vertically stacked four times without reaching the top. The scale of this natural wonder is quite staggering.

It is cool on Mt Haleakala; bring a windproof jacket. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Guests with a heart condition or respiratory difficulties should note that the elevation of Haleakala is 10,032 feet above sea level. Views are not guaranteed as they are weather and atmospheric conditions permitting. The road to the summit is a series of winding switchbacks; guests who suffer from motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
