Day 1 (L/D)
Tender ashore where you will be met by your guide/driver. You are about to embark on possibly the most beautiful drive New Zealand has to offer as you journey into the UNESCO World Heritage Site Fiordland National Park. First, descend into the imposing Cleddau Valley, where you will enter the Homer Tunnel. Continue on through the bush-clad Eglinton Valley, past Lake Gunn and the super-serene "mirror lakes" to Lake Te Anau, the South Island's largest lake. Lunch will be served at Fiordland Lodge. Following a delicious meal, cross the northern part of the Southland Plains via the towns of Mossburn and Garston to Kingston, located at the southern end of the magnificent Lake Wakatipu. You will skirt the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu to Frankton for stunning views across the lake to Queenstown, your next stop. Take a trip up the famous skyline Gondola for a spectacular view of the region, with views across the lake and out into the highlands. You will see why this first-class alpine resort town is New Zealand's premier outdoor adventure destination. Check into your hotel for two nights - Dinner this evening will be served at the hotel.
Day 2 (B/L/D)
After breakfast, enjoy a morning drive around the Queenstown and Arrowtown area. First, head out to Arthurs Point for an exciting jet boat excursion on the Shotover River, where the highlight of your ride will be your captain's skillful maneuvering through the fast-flowing Shotover Canyon. Jet boats were actually invented in New Zealand in the 1950s for the express purpose of navigating shallow, braided rivers like the one you will see today. Your next stop is historic Arrowtown, a charming former gold mining town that grew up in the 1860s with the sudden gold rush to the Arrow River. Stroll through the quaint streets and browse at the shops as you take in the frontier-town atmosphere, still very much a part of Arrowtown's allure. You may also wish to visit the interesting Lakes District Museum (at your own expense) to view an excellent collection of gold mining artifacts. Next, you will proceed to a fine local winery or cafe for lunch. Return to the hotel passing Lake Hayes en route and spend the remainder of the afternoon at leisure, perhaps further exploring Queenstown. Early this evening, transfer to your dinner at a local restaurant, enjoy a meal nested in the heart of Queenstown’s bustling lakefront area. Return to your hotel or enjoy the short walk at your leisure.
Day 3 (B/L)
Enjoy breakfast at the hotel before departing for the charming university town of Dunedin. Traveling from the heights of the Southern Alps to the coastal port town of Dunedin, you will pass through the Otago highlands, rich in natural beauty and colonial era history. Your expert guide will unveil spectacular lookouts and guide you to some of the unique history and cultural treasures found across the region. Enjoy a quiet lunch at a local venue before continuing onto Dunedin, a leisurely city tour before you return to the ship at Port Chalmers is a perfect end to the day.
