Depart on your exclusive birding cruising expedition onboard the Paikea. The 18 metre vessel has been adapted for maximum wildlife viewing and close proximity to birds, making it a truly memorable birding, wildlife and photography experience. Enjoy the comfort of a heated cabin, covered wrap-around lower decking, and a roof-top viewing deck, as well as identification guides and detailed commentary from your knowledgeable skipper. Stewart Island is known as one of the best places in New Zealand for pelagic (ocean-going) bird watching - today you may see Giant and Cape Petrels, Sooty Shearwaters (Titi), Terns, Skua, Cormorants and the striking Great Albatross (Wanderings and Royals), and the Lesser Salvin’s, Shy and Buller’s Mollymawks. Three of Stewart Island’s penguin species - the Fiordland Crested (seasonal), Little Blue and the endangered Yellow-Eyed Penguin may also be spotted during your adventure. Enjoy the scenery of Paterson Inlet's numerous bays and coves; possible sightings of bottlenose dolphins, fur seals and sea lions will be an added highlight.
Please note:Guest must be able to manage steep steps and a large lip to enter the boat unaided. Minimum age 10 years. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed. It is essential that you wear warm, layered clothing in order to fully enjoy and participate in this excursion. Outer layer should be waterproof and windproof. Bring gloves, a warm hat and a scarf. Antarctic winds and sudden showers can make for cool temperatures on Stewart Island, regardless of the season.
