This is a rare chance to explore a protected and culturally significant corner of Stewart Island, accessible only by guided walk. The route crosses Oneke (The Neck) — a remote, seldom-visited peninsula on Stewart Island and part of Rakiura National Park.
Begin your journey with a short scenic boat transfer to a secluded coastal landing. Upon arrival, enjoy a warm cultural welcome inside a traditional Maori whare (house), offering a meaningful introduction to the island's heritage and connection to the land.
Your knowledgeable guide will lead you on a walk through a stunning combination of native forest and coastal landscapes. As you walk, enjoy engaging commentary that weaves together the area's Maori and European heritage, local culture, and the island's conservation stories. The trail offers a tranquil glimpse into the natural beauty of this off-the-beaten-track location, with occasional opportunities to spot and interpret native flora and birdlife along the way.
Please note:
Tour requires walking approximately 3½ miles. Terrain includes even and uneven surfaces, inclines, gravel, grass, and steps. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair or for those with mobility limitations. Dress warmly in layers with a windproof and waterproof outer layer. Bring a backpack to stow any layers you shed. Bring bottled water. Wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Wildlife sightings are likely but are not guaranteed.
