Step back in history and visit the charming, elegant township of Russell -- the birthplace of European (Caucasian) civilization in New Zealand. At the turn of the 19th century, Russell was the shore-leave destination for sailors, whalers and traders. It's hard to believe that this sleepy little town was once called 'the Hellhole of the Pacific'.
As you drive through the village, watch for Christ Church built in 1836 and Pompallier House built in 1841.
Skirting the shoreline, you'll pass the Duke of Marlborough Hotel and, from Flagstaff Hill, take in the panoramic views across the Bay of Islands.
Please note: Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair.
