The soils and climate of the Coastal Bay of Plenty produce not only the world's highest quality kiwifruit, but also, in one small spot, the farmers have pioneered the development of New Zealand's highest quality producing truffiere from which they harvest the much sought after, very expensive, black Perigord Truffle.
First you will travel through downtown Tauranga, along the waterfront and then into the hinterland. In this part of New Zealand, nearly all of New Zealand’s kiwifruit is grown, so an insight into this fruit phenomenon will be provided by your guide as you drive through the orchard land.
Upon arrival to the truffle farm, you'll be welcomed into the farmers house to learn about all things truffles. A short walk will take you into their truffiere where oak and hazel trees grow, under which in the soil, the unique truffle fungi grows. After a display from the truffle hunting dogs, you will enjoy the taste of truffle infused delights including cheeses, honey, butter and ice cream.
The return trip to the ship will travel along the coastal beach route in Mt. Maunganui and beautiful Pilot Bay.
