Take a panoramic drive along Waiheke Island's scenic northern route, offering views of the Hauraki Gulf and the Coromandel Peninsula. Island scenery awaits, along with your guide's commentary on the history, geography, culture, people and produce of Waiheke. You're headed to Onetangi (pronounced o-nee-TANG-ee), whose name translates as Beach of Sorrow. This beautiful, mile-long, north-facing beach with a melancholy name features gnarled old pohutukawa trees along its foreshore. The fun and fanciful Onetangi Beach Races, held on a specific day in February each year, include horse, tractor, wheelbarrow and foot races along with sandcastle competitions and summer fashion parades -- a century-old tradition. Enjoy a sample of the island's iconic 'hokey pokey' ice cream before returning to Matiatia Wharf. Please note: Wear comfortable walking shoes. Shade is limited; to avoid sunburn, wear light, long clothing suitable for use as a cover-up. Bring a hat and sunglasses; wear biodegradable sunscreen. Bring bottled water.
