Havre-Aubert is a small hamlet located on the southern end of the archipelago of Les Iles-de-la-Madeleine. A member of the Association of the Most Beautiful Villages in Québec, this little town is well worth seeing. When the Acadians (descendants of 17th-century French colonists) first settled these islands, Havre-Aubert was their first port of call. Their influence still can be seen today in the architecture of the fishing huts, boutiques, and courthouse.
First you’ll visit the Fumoir d'Antan Museum – a typical smokehouse that showcases what was once an important industry in the region. As you taste delectable smoked herring, you will get a feel for what it takes to perfectly smoke and dry savory seafood. Herring, mackerel, salmon, and scallops have been produced here for more than three generations.
At Le Site d'Autrefois, you'll learn about the fishermen's traditional lifestyle. Madelinot fisherman Claude Bourgeois will lead your experience here. Claude lost his boat and his career in a shipwreck; since then, he has dedicated himself to sharing traditional stories, knowledge, and songs in an effort to keep this aspect of Madelinot culture alive.
Havre-Aubert's most popular attraction is the Historical Site at La Grave. Traditional architecture is on display here. The beach has long been a favorite spot for fishing and commerce, and still retains its special maritime flavor. It is also still a favorite meeting place for the village.
To conclude your excursion, visit the one-of-a-kind Atelier Cotier, where sand from the islands is transformed into unique sculptures to forever remind you of the beauty of the sea. Art from the Sea offers works by local and off-island artists – perfect for souvenirs. These establishments jointly form part of Canada's Visual Arts & Handicrafts Circuit.
Please note: Limited tourism infrastructure is part of Cap-aux-Meules' charm; transportation may be more basic than in other ports (school bus or similar). Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair.
