Once the staging point for many Arctic expeditions, St Anthony's sheltered harbor supplied sled dogs and provisions in the race for the North Pole. Today, perched on the northern tip of Newfoundland, it beckons adventurers with breathtaking coastal vistas and a rich cultural heritage and is the gateway to Newfoundland's wild and storied landscapes.
Traveling by school bus, you take a panoramic drive through St Anthony.
Learn about the young English doctor who visited St Anthony and founded the Grenfell Mission in 1892. By sled dog and schooner, Dr Grenfell transported medicine and education to the northernmost Inuit people of Newfoundland and Labrador -- one of the planet's most dramatically isolated regions. The Interpretive Center tells the story of the truly inspiring Dr Wilfred Grenfell -- friend to the poor, with kings and presidents as his supporters. You will also visit Grenfell's home to view artifacts gathered from a life of Arctic adventure and global philanthropy.
Fishing Point includes a shop with a small museum exhibiting a polar bear and other local wildlife. It is also a great lookout point for viewing any dolphins and whales that may be feeding in the harbor.
Please note: The transfer time from L'Anse aux Meadows to St. Anthony is approximately 50 minutes drive each way. Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf, and a warm hat. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour includes admission to the Interpretive Center, Grenfell’s house and the museum at Fishing Point. This is a remote area and transportation will be a school bus. This excursion is not wheelchair accessible. Due to regulations, passengers are restricted from taking mobility equipment on school buses due to it being a safety issue. Equipment impedes the aisles, blocks other passengers in their seats and in the event of an accident this equipment can cause great harm if not secured. Guests can leave a scooter or other mobility device pier side and we will do our best to watch it, but passengers leave this behind at their own risk. We cannot be responsible if something occurs to it while left pier side. Guests should take any keys with them.
