St. Anthony, perched on the northern tip of Newfoundland, beckons adventurers with its breathtaking coastal vistas, rich cultural heritage, and as the gateway to nearby wonders, promising an unforgettable journey through Newfoundland’s wild and storied landscapes.
The area has often been the staging point for many Arctic expeditions. Explorers used its sheltered harbor to take on sled dogs and supplies in the race for the North Pole. In 1892, a young English doctor named Grenfell visited St. Anthony and founded the Grenfell Mission. By sled dog and schooner, he transported medicine and education to villagers in one of the planet's most dramatically isolated regions – the northernmost Inuit people of Newfoundland and Labrador.
Today, traveling by school bus, you will explore St. Anthony. Begin at the Interpretive Center, which tells the story of the truly inspiring Dr. Wilfred Grenfell – friend to the poor, with kings and presidents as his supporters.
Additional stops include Grenfell's house, the local shopping center, and the picturesque coastal lookout at Fishing Point. Grenfell's home offers a chance to view artifacts gathered from a life of Arctic adventure and global philanthropy.
Fishing Point includes a shop with a small wildlife museum including a polar bear and other local wildlife. It is also a great lookout point for viewing any dolphins and whales that may be feeding in the harbor.
Please note: Dress warmly in layers with a wind- and waterproof outer layer; bring gloves, a scarf, and a warm hat. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Tour includes admission to the Interpretive Center, Grenfell’s house and the museum at Fishing Point. Transportation is by school bus. Depending on where the ship is docked there may be additional transfer time to the Interpretive Center. Tour is not suitable for wheelchairs.
