Upon arrival, Enjoy views from the iconic Leif Erikson statue overlooking Epaves Bay before setting out to explore the historic landscape. Your journey begins at the visitor and interpretation center, where engaging exhibits, artifacts, and immersive displays reveal how archaeologists uncovered this extraordinary settlement and what life was like for the Norse adventurers who crossed the North Atlantic.
Follow scenic boardwalks through windswept coastal terrain and forests of fir trees, passing the striking Meeting of Two Worlds sculpture on your way to the archaeological remains of the original Viking settlement.
At the reconstructed Viking encampment, step inside replica sod houses and a traditional longhouse where costumed interpreters demonstrate ancient crafts, weaving techniques, music, and aspects of everyday Viking life. Experience the atmosphere of a living settlement as you learn how these resilient explorers worked, traded, and survived on the edge of the known world.
You will also have the opportunity to visit nearby Norstead, a recreated Norse trading port that further illustrates the maritime culture and commercial world of the Vikings. Wander through this rugged settlement, visit the Chieftain’s Hall, and imagine the ships, traders, and adventurers who once traversed the North Atlantic in search of new opportunities.
Surrounded by dramatic coastal scenery and rich history, this immersive experience offers a rare opportunity to walk in the footsteps of the first Europeans known to have reached North America.
Please Note:
Access to shore is by Zodiac landing onto a small jetty. From the landing area, guests will walk approximately 30 meters to the nearby transportation area, where well-maintained local school buses provide a short transfer of approximately 5 to 10 minutes to L’Anse aux Meadows. The excursion involves a leisurely but continuous walking route through the park on sloped boardwalks, packed gravel paths, and uneven natural terrain. There are 44 downward steps from the Visitors Centre to reach the Sod Huts. Guests will be dropped off at the visitor center entrance and, after touring the site, will continue independently along the designated route to a separate pickup location at the far end of the park, to avoid back tracking and walking the entire site again. From here we will head directly to Norstead. Total walking distance is approximately up to 1 miles (1.5 km). Comfortable walking shoes and layered, weather-appropriate clothing are strongly recommended. Due to local transportation regulations, mobility scooters and similar mobility equipment cannot be carried on school buses. This excursion is therefore not suitable for wheelchairs or guests requiring mobility devices. Canes are permitted, there are no other exceptions. This is a moderate rated tour.
