Board a vintage double-decker bus for a brief transfer to the Halifax Citadel. A red-coated Highlander greets you at the front gate and leads you on a nocturnal journey into the haunted history of Halifax Citadel.

Walk by candlelight through restricted areas of Canada's most haunted historic site. Your guide tells eerie (and true!) tales of unexplained events in each location. Descending through dimly lit passageways to the shadowy inner chambers, stick close to your guide in case a sinister apparition lurks around the corner. You'll pass through ditches, walk along cobblestone alleyways, and peer over the ramparts. Dark tunnels lead to prison cells that once housed hapless soldiers convicted of minor offences.

Take a seat in one of the citadel's historical rooms. The Halifax Citadel has paired with Compass Distillery -- Halifax's only grain-to-glass distillery -- to create a very special series of spirits for you to taste:

Noon-Gun Gin: made with 100% Nova Scotian wheat and infused with 12 botanicals including juniper, cucumber and cilantro. It's placed in oak barrels and aged on-site at the Halifax Citadel. The result is a smooth, full-bodied spirit that will appeal to both gin- and whiskey-lovers.

Daily Ration Rum: made using Crosby's molasses and sugar, aged in oak barrels on site at the Halifax Citadel. Bottled from the barrel, this traditional-style rum derives its color, character and complexity from the aging process.

Fort George Genever: Genever is an early ancestor of gin. Made from a mash of Nova Scotian rye, corn and malted barley, Fort George Genever is distilled twice and infused with a subtle blend of botanicals including juniper, caraway, cinnamon, frankincense and pink peppercorn, then aged in oak barrels on-site at the Halifax Citadel.

Your guide leads you through a tasting of these spirits, paired with locally-produced charcuterie treats .

Please note:

Minimum age to consume alcohol is 19 years. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Bring a light jacket -- it can be cool in the basement.
