Welcome to Basse-Terre, the capital of Guadeloupe. This lush and mountainous town offers a captivating blend of natural beauty, rich culture, and outdoor adventures. Among it is the imposing, almost mile-high La Soufrière volcano.
Set out on a walking tour to discover the Our Lady of Guadeloupe Cathedral – a National Monument of France built in 1736. This historic and magnificent church showcases a Baroque façade cut from volcanic stone and serves as a significant religious and cultural landmark on the island.
Walk down Nolivos Street – the oldest and most lively shopping street in Guadeloupe. Stop to look in the shops, buy souvenirs and check out local craftsmanship.
Next, you’ll pass the Indoor Market, a veritable a feast for the senses. Here you’ll find a rich array of spices, traditional Creole remedies, liqueurs, souvenirs, arts and crafts, exotic and locally grown fruits and vegetables.
Continue by coach to the city limits to learn about rum at the famous Bologne Distillery. Tour the facility to get acquainted with this liquor made from sugar cane, and end your tour with a rum and fruit punch tasting.
