Explore like a local with this walking tour of Fort-de-France, the capital of Martinique. The biggest city in the French West Indies, this tour will allow you to take in its rich history and vibrant culture, colonial architecture, bustling markets, and more. Even if you came to Martinique for the beaches, you’ll be glad you took some time to explore the city and its history.
First you’ll meet your English-speaking guide and walk through bustling, narrow city streets learning about the city's rich history, architecture and tropical plants. Some of the highlights include Fort St. Louis (which guards the harbor), the War Memorial (honoring those who died fighting in various conflicts) and La Savane (the city’s central park).
Pass the Schœlcher Library (named after the island's most famous abolitionist who labored to free Martinique's slaves), Prefecture of Martinique (Martinique’s Government House), and Pavillon Bougenot (a traditional colonial home.)
Continue past City Hall and Municipal Theatre before pausing for some fresh local juice or mineral water.
Then you’ll walk past the court house with its statue honoring Victor Schœlcher and the St. Louis Cathedral before your tour ends at the main shopping street and your guide turns you loose for some browsing and retail therapy.
Please note: Not advisable for guests with mobility limitations. The shops in town are closed on Sundays and holidays.
