You may never want to leave Jamaica after you learn about its rich and storied past. If you’re a history buff or overall fan of Jamaica, this tour is for you. After tours of Port Royal and Kingston, you’ll be amazed by the resilience of the area and the creativity at the Crafts Market. Go beyond the ordinary with this day trip.
Start the day in Port Royal. The city gained its reputation in the 17th century as the "Wickedest City on Earth" during its infamous pirate heyday. Port Royal flourished for 32 years until June 7, 1692 when most of the city sank into the seas a result of an earthquake and tidal wave. During your tour of the Fort Charles Historic Site, you’ll see some well-preserved fortifications and maritime artifacts that were retrieved from the destruction of the city.
Driving through Kingston you will see the development to modernize the city. The city is home to a rich array of historical and natural sites, with colorful complementary stories about Jamaica’s past.
Stop at the picturesque Devon House. Built in 1881, it is the architectural dream of George Stiebel, one of Jamaica’s most prominent businessmen. Enjoy a tour of the beautifully restored rooms, with antique furniture and lovely decorations, and spend some time exploring the shops selling Jamaican craft items.
From here you’ll stop into the authentic Jamaican restaurant for a snack.
Your final stop before returning to the pier will be the Crafts Market where handmade crafts and souvenirs can be purchased.
