One of Trinidad's most important highlights is the sunset tour to the Caroni Nature Sanctuary, known throughout the world and emerged as a national treasure. Just a half hour drive from Port of Spain, we find this maze of mangrove-lined waterways, covering an area of 40 square miles at Trinidad’s Northwest Coast. Here we board a large flat-bottomed boat and slowly cruise through this beautiful, serene mangrove wetland, while keeping an eye out for a variety of birds and other wildlife. The most astounding among these birds is the Scarlet Ibis, the country’s national bird that feeds and nests in this area. This stunning bird is a remarkable sight to see. Both male and female Scarlet Ibises are a bright red color and have black tips on their wings. Every evening around sunset, hundreds and sometimes thousands of these bright red scarlet Ibis fly into the swamp to roost on the trees in the mangrove.
This tour is world renowned among ornithologists as it offers the observer an opportunity to see this rare bird with very little effort.
After this relaxing boat-ride we return to the main landing and make our way back to Port of Spain.
