Step back in time on a tour that combines the highlights of Port of Spain with a visit to the historic Mount St. Benedict's Monastery. Start with a scenic drive past the Magnificent Seven, a group of extravagant and eccentrically designed mansions. Along the way, your guide will also point out other architectural and historic monuments including the Botanic Gardens which are situated next to the President's House. Spiritual, healing, beautiful - these are just a few of the words that come to mind the further this tour takes you up the mountain towards the monastery at 800 feet above sea level. A sense of harmony is sure to settle on you on this visit to the picturesque monastery founded by Abbot Majuel in 1912. At the time, the Benedictine monks fled the Abbey of San Sebastian in Bahia, Brazil because of religious persecution. Your guided tour takes you through the monastery and into the chapel. A small cottage industry shop sells a variety of religious and other items including jams, jellies and yogurts made by the monks. After your tour, relax over a sumptuous mid-morning tea & coffee with cakes in the tranquil atmosphere overlooking the towns and villages below.
Notes: Wear comfortable walking shoes and bring your camera. Please refrain from wearing short shorts, low necklines, or short crop tops for your visit to the monastery.
