Set out with a small group (maximum 8 privileged guests) for a more personalized experience. Extreme Dominica offers an incredible adventure that reveals the natural beauty of the island from the inside out through canyoning.
Gear up at the Cocoa Cottages headquarters in Shawford. You will complete a brief but thorough training program, during which you will learn to harness up and rappel down a wall. Then, hop into a 4x4 vehicle and head to the site.
Hike down through the rainforest to a secret waterfall that drops off beneath the sunlit forest canopy. Seven spectacular, hidden waterfalls drop through the steep canyon, which runs between Titou Gorge and the top of Trafalgar Falls.
Peer over the top of the first rushing waterfall roaring into the shadowy abyss. You are harnessed in, and away you go. Your legs are braced against the waterfall wall as pure, cold water cascades all around you. Let out the rope and slowly descend into a new world. Soft green light filters down the cliff walls of this hidden gorge to the deep, pristine pool waiting far down below on the river. One guide pays out the second security line, and the other shouts encouragement from below.
Touch down into the first of a series of incredible crystal-clear pools descending along the canyon bed. Six more waterfalls await you, ending up appropriately at the seventh fall -- the magnificent Cathedral Falls, complete with vaulted arched walls, a recessed altar alcove, and an enormous overhead "pipe organ" of root masses.
After a half-mile uphill hike out, you have left this secret world behind. Standing in the warm, bright sunlight, it almost seems like a dream. Luckily, you have a store of incredible digital pictures taken with a waterproof camera available for rent from your host.
Please note: Minimum age is 16 years. Not advisable for guests using a wheelchair, for those with mobility limitations, or for those with a fear of heights. Jumping from heights into pools will be required. You will get completely wet. Wear closed-toe shoes that can get wet and a change of shoes for return to the ship. Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel, reef-safe/biodegradable sunscreen, light clothing to act as a full cover-up for further protection from the sun, and a hat. This is a strenuous tour; participants must be physically fit. The hike out includes steep inclines and maneuvering over slippery rocks. The route is winding. Guests who are prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication. No previous experience is required. Minimum age is 16 years.
