You've always wanted to play the steelpan, an instrument often referred to as a drum, but it is not a drum at all. In fact, the steelpan belongs to the idiophone family of instruments. It's also the only acoustic instrument invented in the 20th century. No matter its genre, today's the day you channel your inner Boogsie and follow the beat from Castries to the rustic Orchestra Pan Yard in the town of Gros Islet. The scenic coastal panoramic drive takes you along winding roads and offers glimpses of golden beaches, swaying palm trees, and vibrant local life.
You're here for an interactive steelpan lesson, with one pannist teaching you and others helping you refine your technique and feel the instrument. Examine the whole range of pans played by the orchestra and learn how to play a simple tune. Hear the history of the pan, how the steelpan was introduced to St Lucia, and how steelpans are designed and made.
Think you've pretty much nailed it? Wait until you hear these amazing, experienced pannists perform for you at the end of your session -- their sweet melodies and toe-tapping beats are more than memorable.
Please note: Minimum age is 12 years. Maximum weight is 250 lbs. Participants must be in good health. Those with a back, leg, hip, neck or respiratory condition are not allowed to participate. The route is winding. Guests prone to motion sickness should consider this before booking and/or take appropriate medication.
