Travel by air-conditioned coach on a scenic drive through the Motagua River Valley on a scenic adventure framed by dramatic landscapes. The winding roads traverse lush hillside and reveal the rugged beauty of the valley. Along the way, your knowledgeable guide will share fascinating information about the country, the region and its people.
When you arrive at the majestic Rio Dulce ("Sweet River"), you'll pause for photos at the top of the Rio Dulce Bridge. Flanked by dense greenery and limestone cliffs, it is a natural spectacle that is naturally photogenic.
Next, you’ll visit the anticipated and nearby San Felipe Fortress – a fort built by the Spaniards during their conquest in the 17th century, designed to keep pirates out of Lake Izabal and the treasure-storage facilities they had built there. The fortress showcases Spanish colonial military architecture and has commanding views over the lake, evoking a sense of the region’s maritime history.
Afterward, enjoy some free time to purchase souvenirs and local handicrafts before beginning the return trip back to the pier.
Please note: Travel time is approximately 1½ hours each way. Wear sensible footwear. Shade is limited; please dress accordingly. Bring a hat and wear sunscreen.
