Take your breath away with an excursion to Las Escobas, part of Guatemala’s rain forest jungle that is filled with adventure and stunning surroundings.
To start today’s journey, depart the pier and drive to the Las Escobas site, where you will enjoy a guided nature walk and visit to the waterfalls and pools. The site is located within the San Gil Hill Natural Reserve, and run by a nonprofit organization called FUNDAECO. Their main goal is the sustainable development of the site with respect to the local communities.
As you hike wooden paths that wind through tropical flora and fauna, you’ll have the opportunity to see some 400 species of birds, insects, reptiles, and thousands of plants and of other species. Eventually, you’ll end up at various pools that are fed by breathtaking waterfalls. You will have a chance to swim here, in the emerald green waters. This river provides fresh purified water to the local communities of Santo Tomás de Castilla and Puerto Barrios.
Please note: Wear your swimsuit under your clothing; bring a towel. Wear comfortable walking shoes. Do not wear perfume, insect repellent or other substances that might contaminate the water, as it is a drinking water source for the locals. Swimming is limited to 15 minutes and is dependent on the water level in the river. The nature reserve’s gravel hiking trails are uneven and include steps with and without handrails.
